Profile Study 1

I Always Bet on the Grey

This is a soft pastel drawing of grey horse I started 10/6/10 and finished 10/11/10.  I love how fast pastels are to work with.

Refugee Women of Darfur, 2004

Prismacolor drawing from a photograph of refugees from Darfur in 2004.  I love the way the women were seated, forming a lovely "S" shape, and the bright colors of their clothing moves the eye around the scene.  The picturesque scene does not tell the story of the terrible forces that have driven these women and their families from their homes.  I found the beauty of the photograph (torn from an old National Geographic magazine) heartbreaking.  I completed this drawing in late September, 2010. 

Poppies

I gave this watercolor to my mother for her birthday 9/19/2010.  It was completed earlier in Sept.  I tried to capture the transparency of the petals of the poppies and the quality of the light shining through.

Dinghies

 

These are acrylic renderings of colorfully painted wooden dinghies.  The landscape format is the more recent of the two, and more "photo-realistic."  Although the earlier piece isn't quite as well executed, I kind of like the brush-stroke effect.   Both of these were completed in 2009.  I also did an orange dinghy that I gave my brother Jim for Christmas in 2009.  I need to get a snapshot of that one to add later.

Silhouette Greeting Cards

This is a series of five greeting cards done with Prismacolor Art Stix and India ink.  The original images are 17" x 11", and the reduced images fold into 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" cards.  I made 5 or 6 sets and gave them away as gifts.  My plan is to scan them to digital jpg files and submit them to Card Universe, an online greeting card site.

Rock and Roll Baby!

These are the posters for Teddy's room.  They are India ink, aluminum foil, holographic stickers, and glittered card stock.  The idea was to create strong infant friendly black and white graphics, with onomatopoeia words in bright primary colors.  The rock and roll theme was chosen because poor Theodore has to share his room with a number of guitars and a cello.  They have since been framed in black wooden frames matted in black or white in contrast to the background of the individual posters, and are hanging on Teddy's walls in DC.  They are all signed "grandma lynnmarie 2010" and were completed in time for Katy's baby shower in June of 2010.  India ink is surprisingly fun and satisfying to work with, because it is quick and very, very black.  Mounting the letters was a challenge, because the white glue I used initially did not adhere well to the foil backing I put on the letters to give them and edgier outline, so I had to strip them all off and re-glue them with a spray on contact cement.  Live, learn, and create.

Madonna in graphite

This is a graphite sketch of a mother and child, inspired by a magazine photo ad.  It was a gift for my mother in 2009.  The child looks a lot like me when I was little, and the hairstyle on the mother is similar to the way my mother wears her hair - a little temporal juxtaposition, but who cares?  This is my first graphite drawing.  I was most pleased with the detailing on the sweater sleeve.  The baby's right thumb gave me fits.  I am still not happy with it!

Sailor Girl

This is my very first picture, after I started taking lessons from PJ Johnson at the Lakeshore School of Fine Art.. It was either 2004 or 2005, I'm a little fuzzy on timeline during that part of my life.  It is a Prismacolor colored pencil drawing from a photo I took of Katy when she was about five years old.  We were sailing on our old boat,  Callooh! Callay!  The orange and blue blooper made a nice background for the orange life jacket.  It is in a driftwood/barn wood style frame, below.  This photo is after the drawing was framed, so the colors are slightly washed out because of the glass.  The original photo was used on the cover of a local sailing magazine by my friend and editor, Sheila Cullen.

Lobter Traps on the Dock

This is my first watercolor.  I started it before my transplant in 2007, and finished it in 2008.  It was an anniversary gift for my amazing husband, Ron.  The numbers on the boat "92284" are the date of our wedding: 9/22/84.  The name on the bow is my signature "LYNNMARIE" (although I normally sign in all lower case: lynnmarie.)  The sky is retouched a bit in the photo to erase glare on the glass, since the photo is after I had the painting framed.  Below is a photo including the frame, glare and all.

Beautiful Katy

 Oil portrait of Katy completed in Dec. 2009, and given to Katy and Steve as a Christmas gift.  The style is impressionist, and Katy said it reminded her of Vermeer's The Girl with a Pearl Earring.  I am totally flattered!

Rapunzel at the Eastern Market

This is an expressionist acrylic and fabric portrait of a jewelry seller at the Eastern Market in DC, done in the winter of 2009/2010.  I submitted it for the Muskegon Museum of Art Regional, and it was rejected!  I'm still annoyed and disappointed.

This is the photo of a jewelry seller at the Eastern Market in DC, October 2009.  I think she has one of the strongest and strikingly beautiful faces I have ever seen.  I think she thought it was a little strange that I wanted to photograph her.

Katy and Teddy

This is my first attempt at dry pastels, started 9/28/2010 and finished 9/29/2010.  Not too shabby, although I think the outlines are a little too strong.  Pastels are very tactile (and messy) to work with, and this drawing developed really quickly

This is the photo that I used as my inspiration.  I took it just a couple of hours after Teddy was born, on 9/8/2010.
